ILIAS, GREECE

The House

The beautiful Ilias estate is set in the southern tip of mainland Greece, an area known as the Mani. The Mani combines the seascape of the Greek Islands with some of the most dramatic scenery Europe has to offer. Ilias sits above a terraced olive grove overlooking the sea in front and the Taygetos Mountains. While the main house and guest house sit on the ridge, the rest are scattered throughout five acres of terraces below, where olive, fig, pomegranate, almond, lemon and orange trees give shade to the separate bedrooms, each with its own terrace and breathtaking views over the sea.

The Bedrooms

The bedrooms at Ilias are spread out throughout the gardens of the property. While the main house and guest house sit on the ridge, the rest are scattered throughout the five acres of terraces below, where olive, fig, pomegranate, almond, lemon and orange trees give shade and scent to the separate bedrooms, each with its own terrace and breathtaking views over the sea. The master or ‘Tower Room’ is in the main house. There are then three other buildings where the rooms are situated known as: The Guest House, The Girl’s House and The Boy’s House.

The Guest House is directly next to the Main house, while the Girl’s House is a short walk beyond the pool area and has two beautiful double bedrooms with views out to sea. The Boy’s House has three double bedrooms and is situated below the pool terrace. All rooms have en suite bathrooms.

"In the cavernous, double-height drawing room of the main house, a distinct air of Englishness pervades: books abound, an open log fire staves off the evening chill and white lilies spill from vases. But it’s a summer room too, with a cool stone floor and doors and windows opening on all sides to shady verandas and alfresco dining areas that capture the breeze blowing up from the sea.

The site is so beautiful it’s like a punch in the solar plexus.

"The Taygetos mountain range on the other side of the house is a purplish haze, and I sit and stare at that for a long while…but decide it’s almost painfully beautiful and have to stop."
